Missing Wildwood Swimmer ID'd; Monkeypox Case in Philadelphia; Lawsuit against Jefferson Hospital

The search for a missing swimmer in Wildwood, Cape May County, was suspended on Wednesday evening, 6/1, after he had gone missing on Tuesday, 5/31. Four swimmers got into trouble about 200 yards off the beach on Tuesday, 5/21, around 4 p.m. on the East Andrews Avenue beach. Local authorities, the NJ State Police Marine Unit, and the U.S. Coast Guard arrived at the scene. One of the swimmers was able to return to shore on their own. Two other men were rescued. The fourth swimmer was still missing. Searches continued until 8 p.m. and then resumed on Wednesday morning. Authorities believe the man was caught in a rip tide. Lifeguards were not on duty at the time. Wildwood guards will only be watching beaches on weekends until June 23 when they starting patroling 7 days per week. Officials say that is you feel caught in a rip tide, don't find the current, swim parallel to shore. Do not swim at unguarded beaches.

UPDATE: 19-year-old Alfred Williams of Delaware County has been identified as the missing swimmer. He is presumed dead. The search is now a recovery mission.

Philadelphia Health officials announced that they have identified a city resident with a probable cause of monkeypox. Testing to confirm the case is pending. Officials are investigating how the individual was exposed and if they may have exposed others. Monkeypox is spread through close, personal contact. Symptoms include include fever, fatigue, headache, and enlarged lymph nodes. A distinctive rash will also develop. "The threat to Philadelphians from monkeypox is extremely low," Health Department Acute Communicable Disease Program Manager Dana Perella said. "Monkeypox is much less contagious than COVID-19 and is containable particularly when prompt care is sought for symptoms. Vaccine to prevent or lessen the severity of illness is available through the CDC for high-risk contacts of persons infected with monkeypox, as is antiviral treatment for patients with monkeypox. I believe that residents and visitors should feel safe to do all the fun things Philadelphia has to offer, with the proper precautions."

A lawsuit has been filed against Thomas Jefferson University Hospital citing wrongful death and workplace negligence in the shooting death of a certified nursing assistant by a coworker last October 2021. Anrae James was shot and killed by Stacey Hayes at the hospital's Center City location on October 4, 2021. Hayes walked into the hospital heaving armed and wearing body armor. He went to the area of the building were he worked with James and opened fire. Philadelphia Police later encountered Hayes in West Philadelphia where he was taken into custody after a shootout. The family of James say that the two co-workers had a previous personal conflict and that the hospital did not address concerns. The night of the shooting, Hayes was not stopped or questioned by hospital security.
