The city of Boston went on lockdown early this morning. One of the bombing suspects is dead and the second is being pursued. Schools are closed, mass transit has been shut down and people are being urged to stay home. The suspects are believed to have robbed a convenience store, shot and killed an MIT police officer. The shootout in Watertown, Massachusetts left one of the suspects dead and a massive manhunt is on for the other. The bombers are reportedly brothers from the Russian region near Chechnya.

UPDATE: The surviving suspect has been identified as Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, 19. His brother, 26-year-old Tamerlan Tsarnaev, is the other suspect. He was killed by police overnight in Watertown. They have lived legally in the United States for over 10 years.

Philadelphia school superintendent William R. Hite laid out a “catastrophic” budget picture which would change the face of schools here. Possibly 3,000 layoffs, no money for counselors or librarians, sports or extracurricular activities, and cuts to aides and summer school. The doomsday scenario comes as a result of a deficit of more than $300 million.

Rutgers University has reached a $475,000 settlement agreement with Mike Rice, the former men’s basketball coach. The agreement compensates Rice for the final two years of his contract. Rice was fired April 3rd after a video surfaced showing Rice physically hitting and verbally taunting players at practices.

Sports
The Phillies host the Cardinals tonight.

Weather
Mostly cloudy. Isolated thunderstorms possible. 77 in Center City.
