Lower Merion Firefighter Killed on I-76; 130yo 30-inch Water Main Break; Arrest KOP Hidden Cameras

A firefighter was killed and three other first responders were injured when they were struck by a suspected DUI driver on the Schuylkill Expressway early Saturday morning, 7/24. It happened after 3:00 a.m. in the westbound lanes of I-76 near Waverly Road. Fire crews from Belmont Hills Fire Company and Gladwyne Fire Company responded to a two-vehicle crash on the highway blocking the right lane and shoulder. As they were on scene, Jacquelyn Walker of Pemberton, New Jersey, drove up the right shoulder and struck three firefighters, a state trooper, and one of the original crash vehicles. Lower Merion Firefighter 49-year-old Thomas Royds was taken to Paoli Hospital where he died from his injuries. The other three were taken to Penn Presbyterian Medical Center with serious injuries. Walker has been charged with homicide by vehicle and related charges. She is suspected of firing under the influence. Tyre Malik McCall of King of Prussia and Cole Henry Strempel of Pottstown were both arrested and charged with DUI in relation to the original crash.

UPDATE: According to an arrest affidavit, Walker had been driving around lost for several hours before the crash. She admitted to police to purchasing soda and rum along her way. She mixed the two and was drinking it while driving. At the scene of the crash, a trooper witnessed her dumping a liquid on the side of the road. An opened bottle of rum was found in her car. Officer noticed she had glassy and bloodshot eyes and the odor of alcohol on her breath. Walker did give consent to draw blood. She believed it was 5 p.m. and she was still on I-295 in South Jersey, when it was actually 3:15 a.m. and she was on I-76 in PA.

A 30-inch water main broke overnight in South Philadelphia sending water flooding into streets and basements and causing extensive damage for residents and business owners. It happened around 12:45 a.m. near the intersection of 6th and Bainbridge Streets in Queen Village. The Philadelphia Water Department says it was a 130-year-old main that broke. Firefighters went door to door to warn people of the break and to shelter in place because of the flooding. A large sink hole developed where the break occurred. Philadelphia crews had to pump water out of basements. Cars along the road were flooded out and were towed away. Water was retored around 5 p.m. Sunday afternoon. 6th Street between South and Bainbridge Streets remains closed. Repairs could take months.

A Smyrna, Delaware man has been arrested after hidden cameras were found in the dressing rooms of two clothing stores in the King of Prussia Mall earlier this month. 26-year-old Joseph Stevenson is charged with Invasion of Privacy; Interception, Disclosure, or Use of Wire Communications; and Disorderly Conduct. The Upper Merion Police Department in Montgomery County, PA, were called to the mall on July 3 when a customer found a device in a changing room at the Hollister store. The camera was hidden in and disguised to look like a pen. A second similar device was found in a changing room in the Urban Outfitters store after Stevenson was interviewed by investigators. The first camera had pictures of six females and one male. The second camera had images of two females. Police have identified and contacted the first seven victims, but are still working to identify the second two. Stevenson was arraigned and released on $10,000 bail.
