Robin Gibb, Bee Gees, passes away from cancer at 62

Robin Gibb, member of the Bee Gees, has passed away from his long battle with cancer according to a statement on his official website.

"The family of Robin Gibb, of the Bee Gees, announce with great sadness that Robin passed away today following his long battle with cancer and intestinal surgery," reads the statement. "The family have asked that their privacy is respected at this very difficult time."

Gibb had been diagnosed colon and liver cancer 2 years ago and made some recovery, until a secondary tumor and pneumonia put him in the hospital this past April. His fell into a well publicized coma and did regain consciousness and was able to communicate with family a few weeks ago.

Robin and his brothers Barry and Maurice Gibb topped the charts throughout their decades long career as the Bee Gees. They were most notably known for their signature 70's disco sound and their landmark work on the Saturday Night Feversoundtrack as well as their unique vocal harmony.

Robin and his twin brother Maurice, along with Barry were born on the Isle of Man in the Irish Sea. The family moved to Australia when the boys were middle school aged. Their father was a bandleader and drummer, and mother was a singer and encouraged them to sing. They also had a younger brother, Andy, who had is own separate successful career.

Barry, 65, is now the only brother left. Maurice passed in 2003 due to a twisted intestine, and Andy suddenly and tragically died in 1988 with a heart infection at 30.

Robin was 62.
