Gunman Arrested on SEPTA Train, Human Trafficking Sentence, Closing Up to 57 Schools Recommended

A heavily armed gunman was arrested Tuesday evening on a crowded SEPTA train. An alert passenger notified police when they noticed a man board the train at City Hall with a gun protruding from his bag. It turned out to be an AK 47 assault rifle. He also had a 38 caliber handgun, a 12 inch bayonet knife, live ammo, $700 in cash, marijuana and 22 Percocet pills. Jermal Ponds is being held on $100k bail.

A Philadelphia man has been sentenced to 15 to 30 years in prison for human trafficking ? buying, selling and holding women for a prostitution ring. In what amounts to slavery and trafficking of humans, John Lee was even found to have been running the operation from prison earlier this year.

Closing 29 to 57 schools in Philadelphia is the recommendation from the consulting firm analyzing what it will take to keep the public school system afloat. In a 118 page document released today, the recommendation is to close schools over a 5 year period and make massive changes to future teacher contracts.
