Eagles Great Steve Van Buren Passes, 9 West Nile Cases in PA, $3 million Ben Franklin Bust Stolen

One of the Philadelphia Eagles all time greats passed away Thursday evening of pneumonia in Lancaster. Steve Van Buren was a member of the Eagles' 1948 and 1949 NFL championship teams. He was drafted in 1944 out of Louisiana State University and immediately made an impact. The bruising running back was the first Eagle to be inducted into the NFL Half of Fame in Canton, OH, in 1965. He was the NFL rushing leader 4 times, and was a 5 time All-Pro. When he retired in 1951 he was the NFL's all-time leading rusher. He is still third on the Eagles' rushing list with 5,860 rushing yards and 77 touchdowns. Nicknamed 'Wham Bam', Van Buren is remembered for his powerful running-style on the field, but his humble nature off the field made him more likely to give attribution to the team and help others than take personal accolades. He was 91.

As of Friday, the Pennsylvania Department of Health reported nine cases of West Nile virus in Pennsylvania residents. This includes one in Philadelphia, one in Bucks County, and two in Delaware County. The Philadelphia case is a little tricky because it is a city resident who was diagnosed in Maine and is being treated in a hospital there, she could have gotten the virus anywhere. The New Jersey Department of Health and Human Services reported four human cases, one each in Hudson, Ocean, Middlesex, and Monmouth Counties. The Monmouth case was exposed in Ocean County and the case in Hudson was exposed out of state. People get West Nile virus from infected mosquitoes, who get it from infected birds. Most people have mild to no symptoms and don't realize they are sick with anything special other than a cold or flu, however it can be fatal if it goes untreated when symptoms get bad. Texas has been hit particularly hard this summer.

Lower Merion police are looking for 46-year-old Andrea Lawton of Philadelphia. She is identified as the suspect in the buglary at a home in Bryn Mawr on Friday afternoon. Lawton stole an unusual but extremely valuable item during her interrupted burglary. She ran off with a porcelain bust of Benjamin Franklin that dates to the 18th century and is worth $3 million. Anyone with information should contact Lower Merion Police.
