Paulsboro NJ Evacuees Allowed to Return Home

Paulsboro, NJ residents have been told they can start to return home today, Friday, a week since they were evacuated following last Friday's early morning freight train derailment and vinyl chloride leak over the Mantua Creek. The decision was made after air monitors showed the air clear of Vinyl chloride on Thursday and Friday. The last of the chemical was pumped from the ruptured rail car on Wednesday evening. Residents should report to the community assistance center at 1502 Swedesboro Ave. The evacuation area is divided into 4 zones. 15 teams consisting of police and air-detection personnel will escort people back to their homes. The air tester will check for traces of vinyl chloride in the home before anyone enters. The resident can decline the test, however, and just be escorted home. This process will give every resident the opportunity to have an expert at their disposal to check their home as they return. For up to date information on return procedures refer to: paulsbororesponse.com.

The NTSB has completed their on site investigation of the crash site as well. After the last of the chemical was pumped out on Wednesday evening they were able to examine the site itself. The NTSB said they have, "collected hundreds of photos, videos, data, reports, and records; completed mechanical inspections of the locomotives and cars that have been removed from the accident scene; interviewed Conrail employees, witnesses and first responders; and documented the accident site." The NTSB says it will have a preliminary report completed in about two weeks.
