Philly Teachers Back But Negotiating, Arrests in Death of Bucks Student, NJ Teacher Evaluations

Teachers in Philadelphia are back to work but still have no contract. They've agreed to pay freezes and contributions to their health care, however they are now being asked to accept pay cuts of up to 13%. More than 4,000 Union members attended a meeting yesterday where they voted to continue negotiating.

A college student from Perkasie, Bucks County died after being brutally beaten early Saturday morning while walking from a bar back to his campus at Wheeling Jesuit University in West Virginia. Two suspects have been arrested. Kevin Figaniak, a business major and varsity lacrosse player suffered head trauma after an argument erupted into a fight. Kevin Figaniak was a standout athlete at Pennridge High School.

School teachers in New Jersey are back in class this week and for the first time, the state’s 100,000 teachers will be subject to new evaluation procedures. The new statewide system measures teacher by their own performance as well as the performance of their students. The new system of accountability accompanies new national curriculum standards in classrooms across the U.S.
