Two men posing as police officers robbed a food distribution center in Fishtown and got away with about $100k in cash. It happened Wednesday just after 2 am at the Kawa Food Distribution Center just north of Center City. Just as the center was preparing to open, two men with police caps, a badge and guns ripped video recording equipment from the walls and left with two bags of cash.

The two bodies pulled from the Schuylkiil River Wednesday morning were Vietnamese brothers who owed $100k to a violent Vietnamese drug gang. They had been held captive until a third man, a friend, told them he could come up with $40k to save their lives. All three men ended up getting stabbed and dumped into the river. The third man played dead after being stabbed multiple times but was able to climb out of the river after the abductors left the scene. Police are asking for help from witnesses.

Alvernia University in Reading has launched a $10 million program designed to help poor kids through college. Students selected for the Reading Collegiate Scholars Program come from high schools where fewer than 7 out of 10 graduate, live in poverty, but have a desire to succeed in college. Alvernia University is hoping it can break the cycle of poverty by giving full scholarships to motivated students.
