Drexel Grad in Germanwings Crash; Tollefson Sentenced 2-4 Years Prison; Milton Street Stay on Ballot

Yesterday's crash of Germanwings Flight 9525 in a remote area of the southern French Alps killed 150 passengers and crew. Two of the passengers have been identified as Americans Emily Selke and her mother Yvonne Selke. A third American has not been identified. Emily was a recent graduate of Drexel University and a member of Gamma Sigma Sigma sorority. She was a music industry major and graduated in 2013. They lived in Nokesville, Virginia. The Germanwings flight lost radio contact over southern France on it's way from Barcelona, Spain, to Duesseldorf, Germany, Tuesday. Debris was discovered scattered atop the sheer peeks in the French Alps. Officials are treating this as an accident. A black box has been recovered and officials are trying to piece together what happened from those cockpit recordings.

The Selke family released the following statement:
Our entire family is deeply saddened by the losses of Yvonne and Emily Selke. Two wonderful, caring, amazing people who meant so much to so many. At this difficult time we respectfully ask for privacy and your prayers.

Drexel University released the following statement:
Drexel is deeply saddened to hear about the tragic loss of alumna Emily Selke and her mother. Emily graduated with honors from Drexel in 2013 and was a music industry major in Drexel's Antoinette Westphal College of Media Arts & Design. Our thoughts and prayers are with her family and friends.

The Gamma Sigma Sigma Zeta Chapter posted this message to Facebook:
Zeta chapter is mourning the loss of our beautiful alumni, Emily Selke. Emily and her mother were abroad the plane from Barcelona to Dsseldorf that crashed yesterday. Emily served as our membership VP while in Zeta and she was an integral part of our growing chapter. She embodied the spirit of Gamma Sigma Sigma. As a person and friend, Emily always put others before herself and cared deeply for all those in her life. Emily will be greatly missed by her fellow sisters of Zeta. Please keep Emily, her mother and their family in your thoughts and prayers during this heartbreaking time.

Former Philadelphia sportscaster Don Tollefson was sentenced today in a Bucks County courtroom after being convicted of fraud. He will spend 2 to 4 years in state prison, pay $164,000 in restitution, and be on probation for 15 years. He could see early release after 18 months. Tollefson rejected a plea deal that would have totaled 2 years, with only 6 months of prison and included intensive addiction treatment. He was convicted in January of scamming over $300,000 from donors and charities by selling tickets and vacation packages that he never delivered. Tollefson claimed that he was simply a bad business man and was only trying to help the charities. The prosecution showed that he used the money for personal expenses.

A Philadelphia judge ruled that former state Senator Milton Street can remain on the ballot for Philadelphia's Democratic mayoral primary. The ballot challenge was brought by lawyer Kevin Greenburg on behalf of Joseph Coccio, treasurer of the Transit Workers Union Local 234, claiming that Street lives in New Jersey and not Philadelphia. Greenburg pointed to a 1937 revision of the Election Code that says a candidate lives where his spouse and family lives. Street testified last week that his 'common-law' wife does live in her own home in Moorestown, Burlington County, but that he rents a home in North Philadelphia. Street, who represented himself, argued that the old law was irrelevant because neither New Jersey nor Pennsylvania recognizes common-law marriages anymore. Common Pleas Judge Chris Wogan agreed with Street that he couldn't be tied to the New Jersey residence simply through common-law. Greenburg plans to appeal. He has 10-days.
