| Firefly Music Festival Review Day 4 Sunday; Snoop Dog, The Killers, Bastille |

The sun rose on the final day of Firefly 2015, much different than the pouring rain and lightening that cut Saturday night's festivities short. Steve Aoki and The Chainsmokers were rescheduled, but Kid Cudi and headliners King of Leon were not. It was hot, sunny, but with clear skies, and the grounds held up under the deluge, with only a few new mud pits to avoid. Aoki was scheduled early in the day on the Backyard Stage, a unique chance to catch him in the sunlight. The Chainsmokers closed out the whole festival with the last set of the night in the Pavilion, which was also the debut of their new 'The Full Monte' visuals.
I first checked out PHOX on the Forest Stage. They are a cool band from a small town in Wisconsin. Lead singer Monica Martin's voice just has a certain tone and character that stands out. Over on the Lawn Stage, Irish singer Hozier took the stage with his full band. He was in good spirits playing several hits such as "From Eden" and "Take Me To Church." Bastille took the Main Stage in the late afternoon. Frontman Dan Smith made his was back and forth across the stage, stopping at his keyboard, drums, pads, or to stand on the monitors to address the crowd. They played a few new songs as well as "Bad Blood," "Flaws," and "Pompeii." They also did a cover of TLC's "No Scrubs," which they have covered alongside The xx's Angel's in a mashup called "No Angels."
Snoop Dogg has as much cred as anyone on the lineup all weekend, sans McCartney, so he doesn't need any introduction. Give Snoop the microphone, turn the DJ loose, and it's a party. He played everything, his songs, everyone else songs, rock songs, hip hop, pop songs. Biggie, 2Pac, Joan Jett, Katy Perry, House of Pain, Dr. Dre, 50 Cent were just a few of the covers. "Gin & Juice," "Beautiful," "Drop It Like It's Hot," and "Lodi Dodi" were just a few of his own. On the other side of the woods at the Backyard Stage was electronic extravaganza Empire of the Sun. This duo from Australian takes performance to another level. Full elaborate costumes with headdresses, dancers, lighting, videos. There is a fantasy element to the whole imagery of the band and they put on a great show.
The final headliners for the weekend, The Killers, did not disappoint. The crowd was not nearly as large as Friday night's but it was still substantial. They came right out with "Mr. Brightside" into "Spaceman." Halfway through the set, Brandon Flowers asks if the crowd likes Creedance before launching into "Bad Moon Rising." The crescent moon with Jupiter and Venus right next to it had been hanging over the crowd the whole time, plus of course the references to bad weather made it perfect. They followed that up with "The Bucket" by Kings of Leon. Later, they also played "Use Somebody." They finished the night with "When You Were Young." This also happened to be Flowers' 34th birthday.
This was another successful Firefly Music Festival in Dover, DE. The diversity of music acts from rock, indie, edm, hip hop, big, really big, small, was great. Everything is run very well. I have some sore legs from walking all over the place, but that's my only complaint, and my own fault. Until next year. |
