DA Wants Superior Court to Reconsider Lynn Case; New Park Project for Barwin; NJ Hoverboard Explodes

Philadelphia District Attorney Seth Williams wants a state appeals court to take another look at the case of a Roman Catholic priest whose conviction was overturned last week. A Superior Court ruled that Monsignor William Lynn should be awarded a new trial for endangering the welfare of a child related to the church's sex-abuse cases. It said that the trial judge erred in allowing evidence and testimony from 20 accusers of priestly sex abuse that were considered prior bad acts and potentially prejudicial to the case. Williams says they were necessary to show a pattern of the church's behavior. Lynn is still currently in custody despite his conviction being vacated. A new trial date has not been set.

A groundbreaking ceremony was held today for the $2.9 million restoration of the Smith Recreation Center Facility in South Philadelphia. City Councilman Kenyatta Johnson and Philadelphia Eagles Linebacker Conor Barwin have teamed up to raise money for the project. Mayor Nutter was on hand to announce that the city will provide $400,000. Darwin's Make the World Better Foundation is putting in $300,000. This past summer he held a second annual fundraising concert at Union Transfer featuring Mac Demarco, Marian Hill, Parquet Courts, and The Suffers. Last year, Barwin raised $700,000 to complete the renovation of Ralph Brooks Park in Point Breeze. He is nominated for this year's Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year award for his excellence on and off the field.

Officials are investigating after a overboard exploded and caught fire in an Ocean County, South Jersey home. The Smart balance wheel hoverboard was a gift to 11-year-old Craig Alterisio and was charging in his family's living room on Sunday evening when it suddenly burst. It sent burning pieces flying and went up in flames. His older brother put it out with a fire extinguisher before the fire department arrived but it left burn marks on the rug. No one was hurt but Craig's mother Kim Whalen can only wonder what would have happened if he was riding it at the time. Many thousands of these types of toys were sold over the holidays. Amazon (where Whalen bought this model) has pulled sales of several models due to safety concerns. Experts say to charge them outside in an open, dry area.
