Villanova Advances, St. Joe's Falls; Retrial in House Fire Murder; Rattlesnake Bite in Mayfair

In the NCAA Tournament Villanova started the day yesterday with a convincing win to move into the Sweet 16 to face Miami. In the last game of the night, St. Joe's lost in a battle with #1 seed Oregon. The Hawks trailed by 5 at halftime, then rallied to take the lead late in the game. But a final push in the nail-biter put Oregon on top to advance 69-64.

More than 30 years after his two young sons died in a house fire, and nearly 17 years after he was sentenced to death for setting it, Daniel Dougherty will get a new chance to prove he didn't murder his children. Dougherty always maintained he loved them and tried to save them the night their Oxford Circle house burned in 1985. Dougherty, now 56, has been granted a new trial in Philadelphia Common Pleas Court that starts today. Dougherty's new lawyers are expected to present expert testimony to show that the fire science used to convict him actually proved nothing.

A Mayfair man could lose his arm after he was bitten by his pet rattlesnake. Reports say Animal Care and Control Team handlers found the venomous reptile in the man's home on the 3500 block of Wellington Street. Paramedics took him to the hospital, but his condition is unknown. Philadelphia prohibits pets that are fierce, dangerous, noxious or naturally inclined to do harm.
