Nia Ali Returns from Rio; John Timoney Funeral in New York; Sheriff Accused of Sexual Harassment

The Rio Olympics are over and athletes are heading home. Philadelphia's own track and field athlete Nia Ali got a triumphant welcome at Philadelphia International Airport at about 2am. Ali earned silver in the 100-meter hurdles, while teammate Brianna Rollins got gold and Kristi Castlin took bronze. That gave the U.S. its first sweep in the event. Family and friends were there to greet her and her 15-month old son, Titus. Ali took time to sign autographs and take selfies with fans at the airport. Ali grew up in Germantown and attended West Catholic High School.

Philadelphia Mayor Jim Kenney joined the family, friends and colleagues of former Philadelphia police commissioner John Timoney at a funeral mass at New York’s St. Patrick’s Cathedral this morning. New York Police Commissioner William Bratton delivered the eulogy. Timoney served as a top deputy for him before former mayor Ed Rendell brought him to Philadelphia. Timoney served as Philadelphia police commissioner from 1998 until 2002. He also led Miami's police department for seven years. John Timoney died last week after a battle with lung cancer.

In Lancaster County there is a controversy over allegations that the sheriff there sexually harassed a female deputy with creepy and pornographic emails. The county Board of Commissioners has called for Sheriff Mark Reese to resign from his elected position after an internal investigation in which the commissioners say he admitted sending the emails to Deputy Jessica Padilla, 42. Reese’s attorney’s are expecting the release of emails from Padilla to shed more light on the situation. In one, Reese wrote to her: "I really wanted to reach over and rub your legs through those tight pants!! Now THAT would be misbehaving hon!!!" The most egregious contains a lengthy fictional story by Reese explicitly describing sex between him and a new deputy he calls "baby." "Her boss, me, was attracted to her from the first time he saw her, but she never knew it," he wrote. It quickly gets X-rated. Reese has been on paid leave since July 26 after the commissioners began their investigation. Padilla remains on the job.
