2017 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Inductees Announced; Pearl Jam and Tupac Shakur Lead

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland, OH, announced next year's inductees to the hall. Leading the way are Pearl Jam and Tupac Shakur. Both appeared on the ballot in their first year of eligibility. Also selected after appearing on the ballot for the first time were Joan Baez, Electric Light Orchestra, and Journey. Finally, progressive rockers Yes will also be inducted next year. This was their third nomination. The other nominees this year included: Bad Brains, Depeche Mode, Jane's Addiction, Steppenwolf, Janet Jackson, the Cars, the Zombies, Chaka Khan, J. Geils Band, Joe Tex, Kraftwerk, MC5, and Chic (for a record 11th time). Coincidentally, Nile Rogers of Chic and prolific producer will be honored individually with the Award for Musical Excellence.

Artists are first considered eligible for inclusion 25 years after their first release. Ballots are sent to 800 members of the music industry to vote. The Rock Hall selects the top vote getters with at least 50% of the votes for inclusion, usually 5-7 each year. The public also gets a vote. All of the public votes are tallied to create a ballot alongside the industry votes. The 32nd Annual Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony will be held on Friday, April 7, 2017 at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, NY, and will be broadcast at a later date on HBO.
