Legoland Plymouth Meeting Opening April 6; PPA Vote Approves Uber/Lyft; JC Penny Closing Stores

The opening date for the brand new Legoland Discovery Center in Plymouth Meeting has been announced. The new attraction will open its doors on April 6th. Last week they announced that Boathouse Row would be one of the Philadelphia landmarks to get the Lego treatment in the MINILAND attraction. (see below) Yesterday, Philadelphia Mayor Jim Kenney unveiled the first completed Lego landmark outside of City Hall. It is a 9-foot tall replica of Liberty Place, both including both towers and the hotel. It contains 17,000 Lego bricks and took 930 hours to complete. This will also be apart of MINILAND. The Philadelphia Parking Authority finally approved the licenses for ride sharing companies Uber and Lyft at their board meeting on Friday. The two app-based ride hailing companies have been operating in the city limits for years without regulation and for most of the time illegally. There have been some periods they were granted temporary permission by the state. The PPA will now be charged with determining regulations and enforcing them. Those will probably include certain vehicle requirements and inspections and more. The group most vocal against theses services in the past include cab and limousine drivers who are subject to lots of regulation and expensive taxi medallions. The PPA will hold public hearings on the new ride sharing regulations.

J.C. Penney announced that it will close between 130 and 140 of its department-stores nationwide. That represents 13-14% of the retailer's locations. In our area, that includes the J.C. Penny store at the Willow Grove Park in Abington Township. It is the only Penny store in the Pennsylvania Real Estate Investment Trust's (PREIT) portfolio of 16 area malls that is closing. The closings will affect some 6,000 workers nationwide. They will be eligible for a voluntary early retirement program. Macy's is also closing four area stores at Neshaminy Mall, Moorestown, Plymouth Meeting, and Voorhees at the end of next month.
