A Temple University student was shot and killed by police after running over an officer while fleeing from an accident in Miami on Sunday. 22-year-old Cariann Hithon was in South Beach celebrating her birthday. The incident happened after 6 p.m. near 12th Street and Ocean Drive in South Beach. It started when Hithon struck two vehicles, ran a red light, and crashed into a third vehicle. A crowd began to gather around her car and police officers approached the banged up BMW. Hithon then floored it, running over an officer. Another officer opened fire on the fleeing vehicle. She crashed into a SUV down the block. Hithon was pronounced dead at the hospital. The injured officer lost consciousness and was taken to the hospital with head and internal injuries. Hithon had recently transferred to Temple from Hampton University in Virginia and majored in political science. She had plans on attending law school after graduation. She had several previous contacts with the law including arrests for assault and drug possession, but no convictions.

Protesters plan to be out in force today for Temple University's Board of Trustees' first meeting of the school year. The board is expected to resurrect discussions on plans to build a 35,000 seat, $130 million multi-purpose stadium on campus. The current proposed location is at Broad and Norris Streets, just two blocks north of the Liacoras Center. Students, staff, and neighbors have protested the idea of an on-campus stadium saying that the impact to the surrounding community has not been considered. Beyond the game day nuisance of traffic and crowds, low income neighbors are afraid of getting forced out of their homes by the stadium. Currently, the Owls play at Lincoln Financial Field in South Philadelphia. They picked up a one year option for 2018 and have another option for 2019. Stadium Stompers

Two middle school students are facing punishment after a racially motivated incident after a football game on Friday night. Quakertown Community School District superintendent Dr. William Harner says that rocks were thrown and racial slurs were yelled at a Cheltenham High School bus at Quakertown's homecoming game. After interviewing 12 middle school students, two 8th grade boys were suspended. Cheltenham cheerleaders and members of the band were aboard the bus. Dr. Harner, a Cheltenham High School graduate, called it "incredibly upsetting." He said, “they embarrassed me, they embarrassed our school board and our community.”
