Fire Destroys Sea Isle Home; I-76 in New Jersey Road Closures; Mighty Writers Back on Twitter

A fire broke out down the Jersey shore, ruining one family's Memorial Day weekend before it started. It happened just before 11 p.m. on the 5600 block of Central Avenue in Sea Isle City. The family had just arrived when their SUV caught fire in the driveway. It then quickly spread to the home. Neighboring houses were evacuated as a precaution. It took firefighters 40 minutes to bring the blaze under control. No one was injured.

Several lanes of I-76 in Gloucester City, New Jersey, are closed for emergency repairs. That is not good news for travelers heading down the shore for Memorial Day weekend. The following closure plan was released on Friday afternoon:

- As of 12:30 p.m. Friday, May 24, the two left-most lanes of I-76 WESTBOUND were closed for emergency concrete deck repairs. The remaining four lanes of the roadway will remain open. This work is expected to be completed by 7 p.m. Friday.

- Beginning at 8 p.m. Friday, the two right-most lanes and shoulder of I-76 EASTBOUND will be closed for emergency deck repairs. This work is expected to last approximately eight hours.

- Once work on the right lanes is complete, a single left lane and shoulder on I-76 EASTBOUND will be closed until about noon on Saturday, May 25 for emergency repairs. There are normally five lanes in the eastbound direction. At least three lanes will remain open while the repairs are being made.

- Klemm Avenue was also closed at approximately 12:30 p.m. Friday and will remain closed for the duration of the emergency work, which is expected to end around noon on Saturday, May 25. Motorists are advised to use Market Street as an alternate route.

A local non-profit that helps young people learn how to write was kicked off of Twitter a few weeks ago when a status update was incorrectly interpreted as a violation of the platform's age policy. Twitter requires users to be 13 years or older. "I went to our profile and I said our birthday was coming up," Mighty Writers executive director Tim Whitaker said, "and we were going to be 10. The second I saved it, they sent me an email with a form attached to it that said you have to be over 13 to run a Twitter program so weâ€™re shutting you down." That's 10 as in 10th Anniversary. 71-year-old Whitaker filled out the required forms and sent a copy of his ID showing he was definitely over 13. They also began a campaign #FreeMightyWriters and â€˜unlock us from your chainsâ€™ to hopefully get the attention of those at Twitter. Whitaker waited for about three weeks with no response. Their account was restored on Friday afternoon after their predicament garnered attention by the press. Mighty Writers uses their Twitter account to update its followers on news and events.
