Family of Temple Student Sues Pub Webb; NJ Wrestling Ref Suspended 2 Years; Willingboro Woman Shot

The family of murdered Temple University student Jenna Burleigh has filed a lawsuit against her killer and the Philadelphia bar where the two met. Burleigh met 31-year-old Joshua Huppeterz at the popular Pub Webb just off the campus of Temple in August of 2017. Surveillance video showed the two leaving together from the Cecil B Moore Ave establishment. They headed back to his apartment nearby on 16th Street where she was killed. The lawsuit contends that the bar failed to comply with Pennsylvania law by over-serving the two. Burliegh's blood-alcohol content was around .283 or 3-times the legal driving limit. The suit also claims that employees may have ignored Hupperterz' intoxication because he sold them marijuana. The Dram Shop law can hold an establishment that sells alcohol to a visibly intoxicated person liable for anyone injured by that person. Usually the law is used in DUI auto accident cases.

Pub Webb's lawyer said in a statement, "Out of respect for the Burleigh family my client has not publicly commented on this matter and has no comment at this time on the pending litigation." Jacqueline Burleigh said at the press conference. "We don't want to see this happening to any other family," she said. "We really want to protect our children, and our children arenâ€™t being protected right now as these bars continue to serve them and not be mindful of the fact that, we as a people, need to take care of each other."Â

A New Jersey high school wrestling referee who would not let an athlete with dreadlocks wrestle (even with a head covering) has been suspended for two seasons after an investigation by the New Jersey Division on Civil Rights. The incident happened on December 20, 2018, and was caught on video which went viral. The black Buena Regional High School wrestler, junior Andrew Johnson, chose to cut off his hair as the injury clock ticked or otherwise he would have been forced to forfeit the match. He won the match in OT. Referee Anthony Maloney, who is white, is barred from officiating for the next two years. The state also mandated bias training for all high school sports officials and staff.

A woman was shot and killed while sitting in her car in Willingboro, NJ, on Wednesday morning, 9/18. It happened around 10:30 a.m. on Baldwin Lane in the Buckingham Park section. 26-year-old Deasia Ayres was found shot to death inside her parked car with a single gunshot wound.
