First Vaping Death Announced in NJ; Major Drug Ring in MontCo; NJ Woman Murdered Fiance

The first death associated with vaping in New Jersey was announced by officials on Tuesday, 10/1. The death of the adult female from North Jersey actually occurred in August. The New Jersey Department of Health says that the number of confirmed and probable cases of serious lung disease is 14. There are also 32 reports of severe lung illness still under investigation. Those affected are between 15 and 51 years of age.

Portions of an international drug trafficking ring were dismantled by local and federal authorities in Montgomery County. Former Montgomery County Sheriff’s Deputy David Landis is accused of receiving shipments of deadly fentanyl and other opioids from a Chinese website and then sending those drugs other places in the United States, Canada, Spain, Chile, and Senegal. U.S. Attorney Bill McSwain believes those drugs were responsible for the death of at least 5 people. Three Chinese men (Deyao Chen, Guichun Chen, and Liangtu Pan) who created the website and sold the drugs to Landis over the internet have also been charged, but since they are in China it is unlikely they will ever face those charges.

A New Jersey woman is facing charges after stabbing her fiance during an argument and then leaving him in a car outside the hospital where he later died. 27-year-old Ciara Williams is charged with murder and weapons offenses in the death of 35-year-old Dennis Power. It happened on Sunday, 9/29, in their apartment at the Brick Gardens Apartments in Brick, Ocean County. After stabbing Power during an argument, Williams drove him to the hospital and left him in the vehicle outside. She then went home. Hospital workers found him unconscious and still breathing, but he died a short time later. Williams turned herself in on Monday, 9/30.
