Girl Struck After Getting Off Bus; 3 Dead, 8 Injured in Van Crash; Mayor Introduces New Vaping Bill

A 7-year-old girl was struck by a car after getting off of the school bus in Springfield, Delaware County, on Wednesday afternoon, 10/16. It happened around 3:40 p.m. on the 400 block of E. Woodland Avenue. Jayzlin Yeboah, a Sabold Elementary School second grade student, was transported to Crozer Chester Hospital in critical condition. Her sister Jenyl says that the bus had its lights on and stopped when they got off. As they went to cross the street, a car drove by and hit Jayzlin. The driver did stop at the scene. The investigation is ongoing. No charges at this time.

Three people were killed and eight others were injured in a single-vehicle crash in Chester County on Wednesday afternoon, 10/16. It happened around 2:30 p.m. on the Rt. 1 bypass southbound near the Newark Road Exit in New Garden Township. The multi-passenger work van went off the road and rolled several times. One person was ejected from the van, the other victims were trapped. The injured were taken to several hospitals, some in critical condition. A spokesperson from Herr's released this statement, "It is our understanding at this time, although we have few details at this point, that this vehicle may have contained employees of a temp service we used. We have no other information at this time. They were not full-time employees of Herr's, and this is all we know at this point." The cause of the crash is still under investigation. There was heavy rain in the area at the time. The victim's identities have not been released pending family notification.

Mayor Jim Kenney and other city leaders announced on Wednesday, 10/16, that they are crafting a bill aimed at stopping kids from vaping. The bill is also motivated by the recent vaping health concerns tied to cases of lung illness and deaths nationwide. The bill is expected to be introduced to City Council during their session on Thursday, 10/17. Unlike other legislation or orders in other parts of the country that outright bans vaping products, this bill would simply restrict access to them. "Under this bill, e-cigarettes that have flavor or high levels of nicotine will only be allowed to be sold in stores that do not allow children to enter the premises," Kenney said. "Adults smokers who want to use e-cigarettes as a means to quit smoking will be able to buy lower nicotine, tobacco-flavored e-cigarettes in any store with a tobacco sales permit," said Kenney.
