Arrest in 4yo's Shooting in Olney; Arrest in Temple Player Murder; New COVID-19 Case, Schools Close

Philadelphia police have arrested and charged a man in the shooting of a 4-year-old boy on Saturday night, 3/7. 23-year-old Jerrod Miner is charged with aggravated assault, simple assault, and weapons charges. It happened around 8 p.m. on the 5500 block of North 4th Street in the city's Olney section. Miner was inside the home playing around a group of children when he brought out a gun. The weapon went off and struck the boy in the hip. The child was rushed to Einstein Medical Center and is currently in stable condition.

Philadelphia police arrested a man in the murder of former Temple University football player Zaire Williams. 22-year-old Anthony Nieves of Philadelphia has been charged with murder, aggravated assault, simple assault, and other related charges. It happened on March 2nd. It began as a confrontation at the Johnny Walker Bar on 10th and Race Streets. That conflict moved to the 1800 block of West Montgomery Avenue near Temple's campus. A fistfight broke out. 25-year-old Williams reportedly won the fight, but Nieves pulled a gun and shot him in the head. Williams was rushed to the hospital but died. A gun was recovered at the scene.

Montgomery County officials announced a new case of novel coronavirus in the county on Monday, 3/9. This man works as a cardiologist at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia King of Prussia Specialty Care site. He is currently at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania in critical condition. Officials say that he contracted the COVID-19 virus during a trip overseas. Services at the KOP clinic have been suspended. All staff that worked with the doctor are being asked to self-quarantine for 14 days.

Cheltenham School District announced that all of its buildings will be closed through Friday, March 13. A parent is a caretaker of a person with a presumptive case of coronavirus. "This decision was reached in consultation with the Montgomery County Department of Health and Human Services, and made out of an abundance of caution. As of this afternoon, there are only five confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Montgomery County, none in the Cheltenham School District," officials said in a statement. During the time that school is closed, all buildings will thoroughly cleaned.

Lower Merion School District announced that it will be closed on Tuesday, March 10 out of an abundance of caution. Superintendent Robert Copeland said that two students and a staff member may have been exposed to coronavirus (COVID-19) after visiting Children's Hospital of Philadelphia facility in King of Prussia, Pa. A doctor at that facility has been diagnosed with the virus. Those three people are also self-quarantining for 14 days. The Montgomery County Office of Public Health says that they do not pose a health risk since the are not showing any symptoms, however, the school will be thoroughly cleaning its facilities.

UPDATE: Hatboro-Horsham School District will close Simmons Elementary School on Tuesday, 3/10, for cleaning. A student there visited the CHOP KOP location. State officials say the child poses low risk of transmission and does not have any symptoms.

Norristown Area and Upper Merion Area school districts will be closed on Tuesday. Neshaminy High School and West Chester Henderson High School will also be closed. They are all taking similar precautions due to exposure at the CHOP KOP location.
