| Philly City Council Says No to Philly Police Increase; NJ Trooper Shooting Video; Body in Schuylkill |

Fourteen of 17 Philadelphia City Council members wrote a letter to Philadelphia Mayor Jim Kenney saying that they 'cannot accept the proposed $14 million increase to the police budget for Fiscal Year 2021.' The move was motivated because 'people of our city are telling us that police reform cannot wait.' Council has been in budget hearings for the past several weeks. They received a revised budget from Mayor Kenney on May 1 that had deep cuts and even eliminations of many jobs and services in response to the coronavirus COVID-19 pandemic. Policing was one of the few sectors that saw an increase in budget and is by far the largest city expenditure.
Council's letter also included several policy changes to increase oversight, transparency, and accountability. They recognized that police are called to situations where another professional such as a social worker, healthcare provider, educator, counselor, or other would be better suited. Also, public safety could be helped by increasing not decreasing funding for public housing, health, social services, violence prevention, libraries, parks, recreation centers, and the arts. The letter does say that policing is difficult, dangerous work and that it is vitally important, but requires the public trust. SEE the LETTER BELOW.
Those 14 council members include Council President Darrell Clarke, Kenyatta Johnson, Mark Squilla, Jamie Gauthier, Curtis Jones Jr., Maria Quinones Sanchez, Cindy Bass, Cherelle Parker, Kendra Brooks, Allan Domb, Katherine Gilmore Richardson, Derek Green, Helen Gym and Isaiah Thomas.
New Jersey officials have released dash cam video from a state trooper's vehicle from a deadly incident last month on the Garden State Parkway. Sgt. Randall Wetzel had pulled over 28-year-old Maurice Gordon of Poughkeepsie, New York, for driving 110 mph on the Parkway just before 6:30 a.m. on May 23. Gordon had actually also been pulled over for speeding about 15 minutes previously. After receiving a ticket from Wetzel, Gordon went to leave but his car was disabled. Wetzel allowed Gordon to sit in the back of the patrol car to wait for the tow truck. After a short while, Gordon got out of the car and got into a scuffle with Wetzel after the trooper offered him a mask. Gordon then tried to get into the driver's seat of the patrol car, but Wetzel pepper sprayed him. The two got into another scuffle and Gordon again tried to get into the car. During a final scuffle, the trooper shot Gordon six times. You can see most of that on the video labeled 'Recording 10.' Gordon was not armed. The case will be presented to a grand jury.

A Philadelphia woman has been arrested and charged after she ran over a Philadelphia police officer last month during looting in Center City. 41-year-old Angela Hall is charged with attempted murder and other charges after running over officer Antonio Nieves on May 30 near 7th and Chestnut. It was originally reported that Nieves suffered a broken arm, however, he's been undergoing surgeries to also repair 12 broken ribs, a shattered sternum, crushed shoulder, and five fractured vertebrae. Saturday, May 30, was the first day of demonstrations in Philadelphia that devolved into riots/looting in Center City by nightfall.
The body of a man was found floating in the Schuylkill River in Southwest Philadelphia on Monday evening, 6/8. It happened around 7 p.m. near Bartram’s Garden Dock & Community Boathouse. The body was found face down and had both legs severed. The investigation is ongoing. Anyone with any information is asked to call police at 215-686-TIPS. |
