Trump Signs COVID Relief and Government Spending Bill; Logan Row Home Fire; DE Teen Freed From Mud

President Donald Trump signed the $900 billion pandemic relief measure and $1.4 trillion government funding bill on Sunday evening, 12/27. The signing will avert a government shutdown and continue unemployment benefits for millions. Trump did not want to sign the relief bill, complaining that the one-time direct payments of $600 were not enough. He wanted them to be $2,000. The President also criticized a number of non-coronavirus related 'pork' measures contained in the legislation. He said in a statement, "I will sign the Omnibus and Covid package with a strong message that makes clear to Congress that wasteful items need to be removed. I will send back to Congress a redlined version, item by item, accompanied by the formal rescission request to Congress insisting that those funds be removed from the bill."

A row home in Philadelphia's Logan neighborhood was gutted by fire early Sunday morning, 12/27. Three other homes were damaged in the blaze. It happened around midnight on the 4500 block of North Uber Street. It took firefighters about 30 minutes to bring the fire under control. Around a dozen people were displaced and were being taken care of by the Red Cross and a SEPTA bus that was brought to keep them warm on site. Neighbors say this is the 5th time this house has caught fire. The fire marshal is investigating.

New Castle County paramedics and Odessa Fire Company members rescued a 14-year-old boy who became trapped in the mud in Townsend, DE. It happened around 4 p.m. Saturday, 12/26, on a construction site in the Goldsborough Farm neighborhood. The boy was playing with some friends when he became stuck in the mud. Eventually he was trapped up to his thighs. Passers-by were able to free one leg before paramedics arrived. It took 20 more minutes to free the boy's other leg. He did not suffer any serious injuries.

Villanova Men's Basketball head coach Jay Wright has tested positive for coronavirus COVID-19. He is said to be experiencing 'mild symptoms' and is isolating at home. The basketball program has paused all activities. The #5 Wildcats matchup vs Xavier scheduled for January 2 has been postponed. There is no word on when activities may resume. One other unnamed staffer also tested positive.
