FEMA Only Giving 2nd Doses, Other Appts. Canceled; Front Door Stolen; Philly FIFA World Cup 2026

Philadelphia's mass vaccination clinic at the Pennsylvania Convention Center will only be administering second doses for the next 3 weeks. The FEMA-run site will be giving second doses of the Pfizer vaccine to those who received their first dose at the clinic the past few weeks and scheduled an appointment for their second shot then. Walk-ups will not be given a shot at this time. FEMA says they hope to have the Johnson & Johnson one-dose vaccine in a few weeks by April 12.

The Philadelphia Department of Public Health has to cancel around 30,000 appointments made for a person's first vaccine dose. Those appointments were wrongly scheduled at the FEMA site for the next three weeks. "We are sending emails to people saying their appointments are canceled so they should not come," Health Commissioner Dr. Thomas Farley said Tuesday. Those appointments were made when people started sharing a link made for second dose appointments. "Uninvited people got links for the time period when we are only doing second doses and they shared those links widely," Farley said.

Philadelphia Police are investigating after someone stole the antique front door off an apartment building in the Spring Garden section. It happened Saturday morning, 3/20, on the 2000 block of Green Street. The thieves took the whole door, including the hinges, from the front of the building. This isn't the first time this has happened. There have been other reports of stolen doors in other parts of the city. The antique pieces can fetch $1,000s when sold to buyers in other cities for new construction or refurbishments.

Philadelphia Soccer 2026, the city's official FIFA World Cup bid committee, met virtually on Tuesday, 3/23, with officials from FIFA and US Soccer. Philadelphia is one of 17 prospective cities in the United States vying for a chance to host matches during the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The US, Canada, and Mexico will jointly host the tournament. The global event has been held every four years since 1930, but has only been in the US once before in 1994. In 2026, it will expand to 80 total matches with 48 teams. 60 of those matches will be held in 10 selected US cities. If Philadelphia is selected, games will be played at Lincoln Financial Field, home to the Philadelphia Eagles. The Linc has hosted several world class soccer matches in the past. "Lincoln Financial Field has a strong reputation for hosting global soccer events, debuting in 2003 with Manchester United vs. FC Barcelona as its inaugural event, and regularly welcoming major soccer events since, including the 2016 Copa America Centenario and 2019 U.S. Women's National Team Victory Tour, among dozens of other notable professional soccer matches," officials say. FIFA officials hope to tour bid cities this summer and announced selections in the fall.
