Body Found in Search for Linda Stoltzfoos; Book Philly Vaccine Apt.; SW Philly Senior Gates Scholar

The FBI, East Lampeter Township Police Department, and Pennsylvania State Police discovered human remains on Wednesday, 4/21, during a search for the body of 18-year-old Amish teen Linda Stoltzfoos. They were searching in a rural area in the eastern part of Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, but did not specify the exact location or how they knew where to look. The family of Stoltzfoos says that it is her, but the Lancaster County Coroner must perform an autopsy to make an official identification and determine cause of death. The teenage Stoltzfoos went missing exactly 10-months ago, back on June 21, 2020. She had been walking from church and never showed up at a youth group she had planned on attending. Surveillance video showed her getting into a red Kia Rio. Justo Smoker was arrested on July 10 and charged with felony kidnapping and misdemeanor false imprisonment. Stoltzfoos' clothes had been previously found in a wooded area near where Smoker's red Kia was parked. He was later charged with murder on December 21, despite officials not having a body. Lancaster County District Attorney Heather Adams said at the time, "After careful consideration of all of the facts uncovered by the investigation as a whole, we are now in a position - legally - to charge Smoker with murder."

Vaccine eligibility opened up for everyone 16+ on Monday, April 19. Depending on where you live, demand vs. availability could tip either direction. Montgomery County is still seeing more demand than officials can keep up with, but in Philadelphia it seems like it is starting to tip the other way. The large clinics are not reaching their daily limits and are leaving many vaccination slots unfilled each day. Appointments are available and walk-ins are welcome for Philadelphians at both the FEMA mass vaccination sites located at the Pennsylvania Convention Center and Esperanza. If you live in the city, you can now sign up for own appointments directly. Previously, you had to receive an invitation from the city if you were in one of the first phases.

18-year-old Akayla Brown from Southwest Philadelphia has won one of the highly selective Gates Scholarships given by The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. Brown is a senior at William W. Bodine High School. The highly sought after scholarship pays for all costs including tuition, fees, room, board, books, and transportation, and may include other personal costs for 5 years. The program was created to help "outstanding minority students who come from low-income backgrounds realize their maximum potential."

*this is different than the similarly, well-known Gates Millennium Scholarship, which also includes graduate school funding for specific areas of study.
