Two Fin Whales on Beach in NJ and DE; Officer Involved Shooting in Bucks; Trenton Praises Athing Mu

Two enormous fin whales washed ashore on separate beaches on Sunday, 8/29, in New Jersey and Delaware and died. Fin whales are the second largest species besides blue whales and can grow to be 80 feet long. A 54-foot fin whale was found on the beach in Barnegat Light, Long Beach Island, NJ. The Marine Mammal Stranding Center says the whale has a large impact on its right side which led to its death. It was likely caused by a ship. The whale was buried on the beach.

A 50-foot fin whale was first stranded on a sand bar off of Lewes, DE, on Thursday, 8/26. It was freed by the tide and swam away. It came back on Sunday and beached itself on the ocean side of The Point at Cape Henlopen State Park. The Marine Education Research and Rehabilitation Institute says a necropsy found the whale had significant parasitic infections in the liver, lungs and kidneys.

A man was killed in an officer-involved shooting shooting in Bucks County on Sunday afternoon, 8/29. It happened just after 12 p.m. on the on the 400 block of Federal Lane in Falls Township. Police responding to the report of a domestic disurbance. The man who was shot was pronounced dead at the scene. The details of what led up to the shooting and the identity of the deceased have not been released. No one else was injured. The Bucks County District Attorneyâ€™s Office is investigating.

An Olympic champion received a hero's welcome home parade in Trenton, NJ, on Sunday, 8/29. 19-year-old Athing Mu won two track and field gold medals this summer at the Tokyo Olympics. She won the Women's 800m in a time of 1:55.21. That time was a new American record and the first time an American won the event since 1968. She lowered that record to 1:55.04 at the Prefontaine Classic held last week in Oregon. She was also a member of the gold medal winning 4x400 team. Mu graduated from Trenton Central High School in 2020 and will be a sophomore at at Texas A&M this upcoming year. She's also a member of the Trenton Track Club.
