Amtrak Northeast Regional Train Derails in Port Richmond, Philadelphia; 5 Killed, Dozens Injured

Emergency crews are on the scene after a passenger train derailed Tuesday evening in the Philadelphia's Port Richmond section. It happened around 9:30 p.m. on the 2000 block of Wheatsheaf Lane near Frankford Ave. The Amtrak Northeast Regional train #188 was making its way from Washington, DC, to New York City. Four Philadelphia Police officers from the 35th District were injured in a hit-and-run after being struck following a struggle with the driver in the city's Olney section on Tuesday afternoon. A 2:17 p.m., officers received a call about a car accident on the 800 block of Olney Avenue. They found a car crashed into a wall. Philadelphia police are looking for the man they say surveillance cameras caught stealing surveillance cameras in South Philly. Police admit they're puzzled as to why the man decided to steal surveillance cameras but they suspect he may plan to come back – maybe for a robbery. A man is under arrest after stealing a cash register from a Dunkin' Donuts in West Philadelphia. It happened around 2 a.m. Tuesday at the coffee shop near 63rd and Girard Streets.
Police say the man smashed the drive-thru window, grabbed the cash register and ran away. He was caught by police a short time later.

Fox has announced that it will be canceling American Idol after next year's 15th season. Ryan Seacrest will return as the host of the show he's led since its debut in 2002. Current judges, Jennifer Lopez, Harry Connick Jr. and Keith Urban, will also be returning for the final season. Ratings have dwindled in recent years for the groundbreaking singing competition. A female student from the School of the Future was hospitalized after someone threw a brick through a window of a school bus this afternoon in West Philadelphia. It happened around 4:30 pm at N. 47th and Aspen Streets. The brick was thrown through a window in the middle of the bus on the driver's side. A brawl in Darby Borough led to a gunman firing 6 shots from a handgun. The incident happened yesterday afternoon at Greenway and Third Street in Darby Borough. Police say a man pulled out a gun and fired 6 rounds with little kids playing in the area. Police say at least one bullet went into a home. No one was hit and police are searching for the gunman.

Philadelphia's Archbishop Charles Chaput says he hasn't received the official word yet from the Vatican, but he’s already planning on hosting Pope Francis at St. Charles Borromeo Seminary in Lower Merion. There is a Great White Shark lurking in the waters off the Jersey Shore. The shark was caught, tagged with an electronic tracker and released in 2012 in Cape Cod. Teenage fugitive Haseem Singletary has turned himself in to police. The 16-year-old was accompanied by his family and lawyer, Bill Brennan, when he walked into Southwest Detectives late Thursday night. The teen has been wanted since Wednesday when he escaped from private contractors that were hired to transport him from Florida to Philadelphia. Police say Singletary has a long criminal record.
