Kingsessing Shooting, Brine and Salt Cost, Christie Vetoes Contractor Product Supply Bill

Police say a man was shot at 17 times and killed overnight in the Kingsessing section of Philadelphia. This happened around midnight on the 1400 block of South Paxon Street. Police say after responding to calls of numerous shots being fired, they found a 51-year-old man — shot in the face and body — lying unconsciousness in the sidewalk. He was pronounced dead on the scene. Police say they believe they are looking for two suspects who fled the scene on foot.

Two Philadelphia Police officers have been charged with beating an innocent man and falsely reporting the incident. Around 10:00 p.m. on May 29, 2013, near North 7th and Somerset streets, Officers Sean McKnight and Kevin Robinson pulled over 23-year-old Najee Rivera who was driving a scooter. Philadelphia City Councilman, Curtis Jones Jr. will propose that every business that serves alcohol be required to install exterior cameras on their establishments. This is in response to the death of Shane Montgomery who was missing for weeks after leaving a Manayunk bar and ultimately found drowned in the Schuylkill River. Lawyers for Pennsylvania Attorney General Kathleen Kane have filed a legal brief as she continues her effort to nullify a grand jury presentment that has recommended charges against her in connection with alleged grand jury leaks. Kane’s lawyers argue that a judge had no authority under any current, valid state law to appoint a special prosecutor to conduct a grand jury investigation of the attorney general. A former Philadelphia Police officer was sentenced today to 17 years in prison. Jonathan Garcia would use a confidential informant to help set up drug dealers, which he would then rob drugs and cash from while in uniform after stopping them. Garcia would turn around and sell the drugs, usually heroin and pills. Garcia's partner, Sydemy Joanis, also charged with stealing money but not dealing the drugs, was sentenced today to 5 years in prison.

Yesterday, an SUV driver and six people on a packed commuter train that crashed into it at a rail crossing in New York have died. The Jeep Cherokee was sitting in traffic at the railroad crossing when the gate came down on the back of the SUV. The woman got out of the vehicle, tried to lift the gate, then got back in the car and accelerated directly into the path of the train. She was killed and the train burst into flames killing 6 on board.

Fire fighters made dozens of rescues from windows and fire escapes while evacuating a burning apartment building in Montgomery County early Wednesday morning. The fire started shortly before 1am at the 600 block of Swede Street in Norristown. It quickly grew to four alarms. One person has died. Three people were injured in the fire, including a firefighter who suffered a cut to the hand while searching the burning building.

Authorities in Montgomery County have released surveillance footage of a man they are calling a 'person of interest' in last week's bomb threat of the county courthouse. Last Thursday around 8:30 a.m. a caller told Norristown police that there were bombs and explosives in the courthouse. A second similar call from a cell phone was placed just minutes later. The Philadelphia Art Museum has announced it has received five major French paintings as a bequest from long time supporter Helen Tyson Madeira who died last year. The Cezanne, Manet, Pissarro and others are already on display in the galleries at the Art Museum. The new paintings join the collection donated by Madeira’s parents Mr. and Mrs. Carroll S. Tyson, Jr. five decades ago.

For the third time since 2011, a city council committee will debate a plan that would force local businesses to offer all workers paid sick leave and Mayor Nutter seems to be on board. Before Council's Public Health Committee is a measure that would require local businesses to offer one hour of sick leave for every forty hours an employee works.
