Indoor Tanning Effects on Teens, SEPTA Subway Tracks Fall, Shop Rite $1000 Baby Formula Shoplifted

Government research links indoor tanning by teenagers with other risks including binge drinking, unhealthy dieting and sexual activity. Scientists at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention found other behaviors were also more common among high school students who use sun lamps or indoor tanning beds than teens who don’t. That included drug use among girls and smoking among boys.

A new survey by Harper Polling has York businessman Tom Wolf surging to the lead in the popularity polls in the Democratic race for governor. Wolf has run a heavy TV campaign across the state for the last month and now has 40 percent of the most likely voters, a significant lead over his closest rival, Allyson Schwartz who had 14 percent.

Philadelphia DC 47 Agreement, PennDOT Salt Hauling, Globetrotters Sign Kevin Grow

Philadelphia and its white-collar workers union reached a contract agreement that ends a five-year stalemate. Mayor Michael Nutter and District Council 47 Chief Fred Wright signed the deal, an eight-year-accord, dating back to 2009 and ending in 2017. The city’s blue collar workers, DC 33, is still without a deal.

The Temple University Board of Trustees voted today to reinstate the men's and women's crew team following a recommendation from the university president, Neil Theobald. He also is seeking a comittment from the City of Philadelphia to help with renovations on Temple's boathouse along Boathouse Row. A popular amusement park in Sea Isle City is shutting down. Gillian's Funland was severely damaged by Superstorm Sandy and the owner has decided to close it for good. After putting $2.5 million into Gillian's Funland in 2009, owners spent hundreds of thousands to partially open last year after Sandy. Gillian's Wonderland Pier in Ocean City will remain open.

Jose Rene Cruz Sentenced, Indiana Store Exposure, THON Raises $13.34 Million

A north Jersey man convicted in the repeated sexual assaults of a young girl has been sentenced to 15 years in prison. Jose Rene Cruz of Irvington must serve nearly 13 years before he becomes eligible for parole. He also will have to register as a sex offender and is barred from having any contact with the girl. Cruz was arrested in March 2012 and was convicted last August.

Philadelphia police are investing after two people were found shot inside a home in North Philadelphia on Saturday. They responded to a report of shooting at 2624 West Somerset Street around 2:30 in the afternoon. A 40-year-old man was found shot in the head and a 30-year-old woman was found shot in the chest.
