A Massachusetts Institute of Technology police officer was shot and killed Thursday night while investigating a disturbance on the campus of the university in Cambridge, MA across the Charles River from Boston. Shots were fired at around 10:48 p.m. ET and the situation remained very active and fluid into early on Friday as authorities still searched for a suspect. Boston Bombing Photos/Video, Bucks County Shootings, Rutgers Rice Settlement

The FBI released photos and video Thursday of two suspects in the Boston Marathon bombing and asked for the public's help in identifying them. The photos of the two men came from surveillance cameras near the explosion sites. Within moments of the announcement, the FBI website crashed, perhaps because of a crush of visitors.

Woman falls to her death from rooftop near Temple Univ.; Phila. man earns Carnegie Medal of Heroism

On Wednesday, April 17, 2013, Ali Fausnaught, 19, fell to her death from a rooftop while partying near Temple University for "Spring Fling". She was hanging out on top of the roof with some friends and for reasons that are not known, fell over a 10-inch ledge. She fell 40 feet onto the concrete. She was announced dead at 5:51 p.m. at the Temple University Hospital. Ali is a Lancaster native and student at West Chester University.

An explosion and fire in Texas at a fertilizer plant fire has claimed the lives of as many as 15 people. The explosion leveled several blocks including a nearby nursing home in the town of West, Texas, about 20 miles from Waco. At least 160 people are injured and 50 to 75 buildings have been damaged.

Senate Rejects Toomey Background Chk Bill; Strong Lead In Boston Bombing; Ricin Letter Sent to Obama

The US Senate has rejected a bill sponsored by Pat Toomey (R., Pa.) and Joe Manchin (D., W.Va.). 60 votes were needed to advance the bipartisan measure, however there were only 54 "yes" votes to 46 "no". The Senate was voting on the specific amendment to a larger gun control bill that would have expanded background checks on gun purchases to include those at gun shows and internet sales. Despite earlier reports that an arrest had been made in the Boston Marathon Bombing, officials are saying that they have no one in custody and no arrests have been made. They have made significant investigative progress. A suspect was identified earlier today from surveillance video from the Lord & Taylor store that was between the two bomb locations.
