Threat Closes Emmaus H.S., School Closures Disappoint Hamels Foundation, Newtown Moment Of Silence

A high school in eastern Pennsylvania will be closed Friday after officials received a bomb threat. Emmaus High School made the announcement in an automated call to parents on Thursday. The school also announced the closure on its website. All other buildings in the East Penn School District will remain open.

Philadelphia Police have released a photo of the man believed to have robbed a priest (see below). Yesterday afternoon an Episcopalian priest was attacked and sprayed with some type of chemical while waiting for a bus around 11th and Walnut. The thief stole a money clip from the priest, which had $125 in it. The priest was taken to Jefferson Hospital. Anyone with info, please call police at 215-686-TIPS (8744).

Meek Mill to donate $10,000 and Sneakers to Strawberry Mansion High

Meek Mill aka Robert Williams recently was ordered to stay in Philadelphia for at least a month per restrictions of his probation stemming from a drug and gun conviction in 2008. (see: Meek Mill Not Allowed to Tour, Cancels Africa Trip, Must Stay in Philadelphia) However this setback hasn't dampened his holiday spirits. Meek Mill will return to his alma mater, Strawberry Mansion High School, tomorrow to donate $10,000 for books as well as Puma basketball sneakers.

Property reassessment figures just released seem to favor Mayor Nutter's push for real estate tax reform in Philadelphia. According to the first wave of data, the property tax rate under a new system would be considerably lower than the rates City Council predicted earlier this year.

Nutter Tax Overhaul, Philadelphia Minister Robbed, Conestoga Teacher Arrested for Public Drunkenness

One day after briefing city council on the overhaul of Philadelphia's property tax system, Mayor Nutter said the change will not be used to increase total revenues overall. The new reassessments of all Philadelphia properties will be used as the basis for tax bills due in 2014. The changeover, though, will be revenue neutral.

Obama was mostly silent on the issue of gun control for 4 years and during his reelection campaign. A gun buyback program in Camden has set a new 2 day record. The state sponsored cash-for-guns program returned 1,137 firearms over two days. According to officials, some gun owners were motivated to give up their weapons by the recent killings in Newtown Connecticut at Sandy Hill Elementary School.

Mayor Nutter held a closed-door briefing for City Council members Tuesday on next year's planned overhaul of Philadelphia property taxes. Sources say the total value of all city properties was put at just under $100-billion. Under the new system, some homeowners will come out ahead, while others are expected to pay higher property taxes in 2014. Residents will know their own individual assessment by February.

The former Miss Pennsylvania who claimed that the Miss USA contest was rigged has been ordered to pay the pageant $5 million for defamation. The arbitrator determined that Sheena Monnin’s comments were false, harmful and malicious. The arbitrator added that there was no reasonable possibility the judging was rigged.
