More than 500 investors crowded the ballroom at the Westin Hotel in Center City this week as the Philadelphia Housing Authority held its first auction of houses, lots, and other real estate.

The 400 properties were sold individually and in packages of two to 25.

None of the properties are in move-in condition, said Max Spann Jr. of the Max Spann Real Estate & Auction Co., which conducted the auction.

Michael Kelly, executive director of the housing... Read More

The National Weather Service announced that 2011 is the wettest year in Philadelphia weather history.

The precipitation total - including all that melted snow and ice - has reached 56.66 inches at Philadelphia International Airport.

The annual average is 41.3 inches. This year's accumulation had blown past that mark by the time Irene's downpours ended Aug. 28.
It’s the wettest 10-year period in 138 years of record-keeping, edging out the 1970s.Read More

Pedro Ramos chaired his first meeting as leader of the Philadelphia School Reform Commission and made it clear he will change the way it does business. Earlier, Ramos had said that "at times, it looks like the SRC's trying to drink water through a fire hose."

Ramos is creating new committees to deal with SRC business more efficiently and transparently, including moving meeting times later, so people who work during the day could attend. He also allowed members of the audience... Read More

Police Say McQueary Never Reported Incident

  by: iradiotom - Philadelphia, PA
started: 11/17/11 10:48 am | updated: 11/17/11 10:48 am

On Wednesday, police in State College claimed they never spoke to Mike McQueary about former Penn State defensive coordinator Jerry Sandusky's alleged sexual assault of a boy in 2002. McQueary had claimed otherwise.

McQueary was a 28-year-old graduate assistant in 2002 when, according to his testimony in the Grand Jury report, he witnessed Sandusky sexually assaulting a young boy in the Penn State locker room showers. McQueary has been criticized for not intervening to stop the... Read More

Penn State's McQueary Is Not the Villain

  by: iradiotom - Philadelphia, PA
started: 11/16/11 6:46 am | updated: 11/16/11 6:46 am

If you've been following the sordid Penn State story you might think graduate assistant Mike McQueary is a criminal. The sports press has convicted McQueary in the court of public opinion, vilifying him without having knowledge of all of the facts of this case. It turns out, they may have all been wrong. An example. For at least 2 days on ESPN Radio's nationally syndicated Mike & Mike morning show, co-host Mike Golic repeatedly tore into McQueary for "not doing enough to stop Jerry Sandusky."... Occupy Philly Not High On Mayor Nutter's List

  by: Rebel - Havertown, PA
started: 11/14/11 2:01 pm | updated: 11/14/11 2:01 pm

Sounds like Mayor Nutter has had enough of Occupy Philly. It’s already cost taxpayers more than $500,000 in police overtime and other expenses, and is now threatening to derail a $50 million revitalization project at Dilworth Plaza.

That's nearly 1,000 jobs that would put food on the table of the "99 percent" that Occupy Philly claims to represent. Jesse Jackson showed up Sunday afternoon and urged Philadelphia protesters to never surrender.

Mayor... Read More

The Legacy of Joe Paterno

  by: Rebel - Havertown, PA
started: 11/10/11 3:03 pm | updated: 11/13/11 4:48 pm

Penn State Coach Joe Paterno, one of the true legends of coaching, has had his career ended by scandal. His 46 year reign, and 62 year run on the coaching staff at Penn State has ended.

2 weeks ago, fans and players were all exulting in Paterno's 409th victory, which made him the winningest coach in Division I history. Over the years, he contributed more than $4 million to Penn State's general fund, which is why the names of he and his wife, Sue, are on the library instead of... Read More

Temple Almost Brought Jerry Sandusky to Philadelphia

  by: iradiotom - Philadelphia, PA
started: 11/11/11 8:13 am | updated: 11/11/11 8:13 am

Penn State's Jerry Sandusky almost landed in Philadelphia as head coach of the Temple Owls. In 1988, Temple University was recruiting Sandusky heavily after firing Bruce Ariens. And the Penn State defensive coordinator seemed to be the perfect fit. He had helped Penn State win a national championship in 1986 and had produced seven All-America linebackers.

"He wasn't just a candidate. He was a high-profile candidate," former Temple athletic director Charlie Theokas said in an... Read More

Tom Ridge Considered to be Next Penn State President

  by: iradiotom - Philadelphia, PA
started: 11/09/11 8:25 am | updated: 11/10/11 7:54 am

According to ESPN former PA Governor Tom Ridge could be the next Penn State president. In the fallout of the Jerry Sandusky sex abuse scandal, many expect current PSU president Graham Spanier to lose his job. Penn State's Board of Trustees is said to be weighing the possibility of having Ridge replace Spanier. So far no one at Penn State has offered a clear explanation as to why university officials didn't report allegations of child sexual abuse to law enforcement... Read More
