PA Turnpike to Raise Cash Tolls

Starting January 1, 2012 the tolls on the PA turnpike will be hiked 10% for all those paying cash. There will be no change in the toll rate for EZpass lanes.

The Turnpike commission is hoping to raise revenues by $23 million or about 3% with this toll increase. Increases have also been approved for 2013 and 2014.

Philadelphia Swimming Pools Crowding

Hot and humid weather's keeping the city swimming pools busy. Overcrowding is now the problem. At Hunting Park Pool, only 240 people can swim at a time... 30 swimmers for each of eight lifeguards.

The staff has them swimming in shifts. They let people swim for 30 minutes, blow a whistle, tell them to get out of the pool, and let the next group in.

Philadelphia International Airport Body Scanner Upgrades Coming

Body scanner upgrades are coming to Philadelphia International Airport. The scanners will stop using passenger-specific images in coming months.

The new software will show a generic outline of a person, not a specific image of an actual passenger.

Passengers will be able to view the same outline that the TSA officer sees, and a TSA officer will no longer be required to view the image remotely.

Archbishop Charles J. Chaput of Denver to lead Philadelphia Archdiocese

The Archdiocese of Philadelphia with it's 1.5 million Catholics will receive a new pastoral leader this year. It was long anticipated that Cardinal Justin Rigali would be replaced as Archbishop after submitting his official retirement papers last year. All bishops are required to retire at age 75, Rigali turned 75 in April '10.

Texting While Walking Not a Crime in Philly

The Internet is buzzing about an unsubstantiated report that the City of Philadelphia was preparing to start handing out $120 fines to people for texting while walking. Clarifying the matter, Deputy Mayor for Transportation and Utilities Rina Cutler aid that the city’s “Give Respect, Get Respect” campaign targeted at cyclists, motorists and pedestrians will include educational brochures for pedestrians, but no fines. Philadelphia Cardinal Rigali Steps Aside

Philadelphia Cardinal Justin Rigali has offered an apology and introduced his successor, Archbishop Charles J. Chaput.

With the sex abuse scandal still burdening the Philadelphia Archdiocese, Rigali took the opportunity to apologize, saying "If I have offended anyone in any way, I am deeply sorry. I apologize for any weaknesses on my part in representing Christ and the church."

With the high forecast to be in the 90s all week, health officials have issued an air quality alert for Southeastern Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Delaware.

The code orange alert coincides with what is expected to be a weeklong heat wave that will grip the region.

The alert means air pollution concentrations could prove unhealthy for children, the elderly and people with asthma, heart disease of lung disease.

"Give Respect Get Respect Campaign" In High Gear

The Give Respect, Get Respect campaign aimed at promoting and enforcing the peaceful coexistence of motorists, cyclists and pedestrians is kicking into gear and has started cracking down on bicyclists.

A traffic-enforcement team of bike cops stopped 803 cyclists and motorists from its May 16 launch. Of those, 600 were cyclists.

According to the Educational Accountability Agreement signed last month by the city, city officials were recently granted look at internal Philadelphia School District documents, providing a level of access that has long evaded those trying to keep tabs on the district.

Netflix Rates Up, Approval Down

This week, Netflix announced it would raise its prices by up to 60 percent for the millions of subscribers who want to rent DVDs by mail and watch movies online.

Netflix will be splitting up its two services, which means that subscribers who want both streaming video and DVD-by-mail access will have to get separate plans that cost at least $16 per month total.
