The Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association (PIAA) Board of Directors met on Friday afternoon, 8/7, after Governor Tom Wolf announced on Thursday that he 'strongly recommends' that there be no K-12 interscholastic or recreational sports until January 1st. Due to a coronavirus COVID-19 outbreak, Upper Darby has decided to quarantine its entire sanitation department for two weeks. Schuylkill Barges Moved, I-676 Opened; PHLConnectED Giving 35K Students Tech; Wolf: No Fall Sports

Both sides of I-676 have now reopened. Three barges that became wedged under the Vine Street Expressway I-676 bridge across the Schuylkill River have been removed. Tug boats were able to push and pull the barges away from the bridge at around 11:30 a.m. on Thursday, 8/6. The barges were being used by the Army Corps of Engineers contractors to dredge the river. Barges being used by the Army Corps of Engineers to dredge parts of the Schuylkill River broke loose during Tropical Storm Isaias on Tuesday afternoon, 8/4. The three barges, which include one with a crane, are currently wedged under the bridge for the Vine Street Expressway I-676. Tropical Storm Isaias blasted through the area on Tuesday leaving behind widespread flooding and wind damage. The storm spawned several tornados that caused damage to trees, cars, and buildings in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Delaware. The National Weather Service is still surveying damage in Doylestown, Bucks County to determine if a tornado touched down in that area. Police are searching for a white vehicle seen near East Market Street and North Race Street around 1 a.m. on July 26. 7-year-old Zamar Jones, who was shot in the head as he played on his porch on Sunday, 8/2, has died from his injuries. It happened around 7:30 p.m. on the 200 block of North Simpson Street in West Philadelphia. Jones was playing with his toys when he was caught in the crossfire of a shootout between two groups of people. 16 shell casings were found at the scene.
