Philadelphia Nominated for City of the Year

The City of Brotherly Love has been nominated for City of the Year in the 2011 GovFresh Awards. GovFresh is an open government news site. Philadelphia has been nominated in almost all of the 20 different categories. Philly was nominated in Best Civic Startup, Best Open Data Platform and the Best Government/Citizen Collaboration. According to TechnicallyPhilly, the only other city with a chance to win City of the Year is New York.

Madonna Will Play Super Bowl Halftime Show

Madonna has signed on to play the halftime show at the Super Bowl in February. The pop star is currently working on a new album and has a new movie which she wrote, directed and produced coming out just a few days after the game.

The show is the most-watched musical event of the year, with more than 162 million in the U.S. tuning in to see The Black Eyed Peas' performance with Slash and Usher in Dallas at halftime of Green Bay's Super Bowl win over Pittsburgh last February.Read More

It turns out Don McLean not only wrote his biggest hit, American Pie in Philadelphia, he also performed the song for the first time at Temple University in Philly

For years, a bar in upstate New York claimed the hit was penned there. The Philadelphia Parking Authority is keeping in the spirit of holiday giving. So that you can plan weekend visits to the city for lunches, matinees and shopping, you can park for free. Every Saturday through New Year's, parking will be free on all city meters between 11 a.m. and 5 p.m. And If you park in the following lots from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturdays, you will benefit from a flat $8 fee.

Chritmas Tree Lighting in Philadelphia

On Tuesday, Philadelphia will light the Christmas Tree on Rittenhouse Square. The Tree Lighting Ceremony features holiday entertainment, character visits, complimentary roasted chestnuts, Santa Claus and plenty of holiday surprises. The Christmas Tree itself is more than 30 feet tall. The Salvation Army will be collecting unwrappped toys for needy children and TD Bank will be handing out free elf hats. The tree lighting ceremony starts at 5pm Tuesday on Rittenhouse Square.

Taylor Swift is bringing more pride to Pennsylvania, not to mention some more award hardware. Swift won three American Music Awards including beating Adele, Lady Gaga, Katy Perry and Lil Wayne for artist of the year. The 21-year-old Swift previously claimed the award in 2009.

"This is so crazy," beamed Swift, who also picked up the trophies for favorite country female artist and favorite country album for "Speak Now."

Pennsylvania's own Taylor Swift is the Country Music Association's entertainer of the year.
Swift won the award for the second time. The international crossover sensation who has sold more than 20 million albums by the age of 21 also won the CMA's top honor in 2009. Swift becomes the second woman to win entertainer of the year twice at the CMAs, joining Barbara Mandrell.

Roger Waters to Perform The Wall in Philadelphia

Pink Floyd's Roger Waters will perform "The Wall" in Philadelphia's Citizens Bank Park on July 14th 2012 as part of a large North American tour.

"The Wall" will be performed in-its-entirety featuring a full band and state-of-the-art production. "The Wall" live has played more than 120 shows around the world for more than 1.6 million fans making it one of the most successful tours of 2010 and 2011.

Occupy Wall Street, the nearly 6-week-old social protest in Manhattan has inspired campaigns, headlines and spoofs that often have nothing to do with income inequality or challenging corporate overlords: Occupy the NBA, Occupy The Bar, Occupy Sesame Street, and Occupy the Bathroom are just a few.

That meets with mixed feelings from the occupiers camping out in lower Manhattan. Some protesters are concerned that frivolous uses could dilute their serious message.
