Iconic Tower Theater Sign in Upper Darby Removed, Structure Deemed Unsafe

The iconic spire on top of the Tower Theater on 69th Street in Upper Darby is being dismantled starting today Tuesday, 8/13, after engineers determined that is has become structurally unsound and posed a safety hazard. The landmark radio tower sign has stood on top of the theater since it opened on October 1, 1928. It initially was a venue for movies and vaudeville acts. Arrest in Deadly Bensalem Hit-and-Run; Teen Shot in Legs at 15th St. Station; 11 Rescued From River

Police are investigating a hit-and-run accident that killed a pedestrian in Bucks County early Monday morning, 8/12. The body of 38-year-old Timothy McGuire of Ogden was found in the bushes along Hulmeville Road near King Avenue in Bensalem after 6 a.m. by a neighbor out for a walk. Police believe that he was actually hit hours earlier around 2:30 a.m. while walking along the road. Green plastic parts of a fender and headlight were left at the scene of the crash. Each August as the Earth's annual orbit takes it through the remains of the comet Swift-Tuttle/109P, we are treated to a dramatic show of meteors streaking through the sky called the Perseids. Named because they seem to radiate from the constellation Perseus, this meteor shower will peak tonight Monday August 12th through Tuesday August 13th. It is not uncommon to see up to 60 meteors an hour with the Perseids.

Two people were injured when a small two-person helicopter crashed near Lehigh Valley International Airport (ABE) on Sunday afternoon, 8/11. It happened around 2:30 p.m. on the 900 block of Postal Road in Hanover Township. Lehigh Valley airport officials say that the Schweizer 269C helicopter departed from the ACE Pilot Training School at the airport. SEPTA is offering a $1,000 reward for information that can help identify a suspect wanted for punching a SEPTA bus driver last month. It happened on July 8th on the Route 55 bus. A young man stepped onto the bus but did not have any fare. The driver did not allow the man to board the bus. Before the man exited, the suspect punched the operator in the face. He then fled. A man is wanted for robbing a 70-year-old woman of $11 at gunpoint in Center City last week. It happened around 1:40 a.m. on July 29th on the 800 block of Locust Street. Two Pennsylvania constables have been arrested for illegally providing security for Sunoco's Mariner East Pipeline. 47-year-old Kareem Johnson, a constable in Coatesville, and 58-year-old Michael Robel, a constable in Northumberland County are facing charges of bribery, official oppression, and ethics act violations. A married couple and their daughter were killed after a small plane crashed into a Montgomery County neighborhood shortly after takeoff on Thursday morning. It happened around 6:15 a.m. on Minnie Lane near Morris Road in Upper Moreland Township.
