Today marks the 24th Annual Greater Philadelphia Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service. It is the largest collective day of service in the country with over 150,000 volunteers participating in events and activities throughout the region. Girard College, in the Fairmount neighborhood, is the center of it all with over 5,000 participants and 150 different activities in that location alone. An early morning two-alarm fire in Old City has displaced 3 residents and destroyed their building. The call came out around 3:30 a.m. Sunday morning, 1/20, for the 300 block of North Front Street. The four story building which included some apartments was evacuated. Firefighters could not go inside because the second floor collapsed causing dangerous conditions. A online threat that caused Upper Merion Area School District to close all schools on Friday, 1/18, was traced to an anonymous poster in Canada. Upper Merion police say that a suspect has been taken into custody by authorities in Montreal. The suspect has not been identified. Police say that they do not know if the individual has any connection to Upper Merion or why they made the threat. Police do say they believe there is no active threat against the community. Officials in Montgomery County are saying that there is no evidence a crime was committed in the deaths of an elderly couple found outside their Whitemarsh Township home last month. 81-year-old Rhoda and 86-year-old Ross Woodward were found by a postal worker at their home on Bethelehem Pike near the PA Turnpike on December 4, 2018. There was a development in the case of a missing Malvern woman, who hasn't been seen since April 2017. 43-year-old Anna Maciejewska disappeared from her suburban Philadelphia home over a year-and-a-half ago. A Philadelphia jury has found Joshua Hupperterz guilty on all counts for the August 2017 murder of 22-year-old Temple University student Jenna Burleigh. The jury deliberated for about an hour-and-a-half on Thursday afternoon, 1/17, before coming to the verdict. Hupperterz was immediately sentenced to the mandatory life without parole. 41 employees (including 4 supervisors) of a human services non-profit in Delaware County have been charged in an overtime rigging and kickback scheme. They are all accused of stealing nearing $1 million from the Elwyn Organization over a 21-month period. The supervisors would adjust employee's time sheets and add overtime hours. The Susan G. Komen foundation announced on Tuesday, 1/15, that it will be replacing the Race for the Cure with a new event called the More Than Pink Walk. The race tradition has been held annually on Mother's Day for 28 years. By next year, all 66 Komen affiliates will switch over to the new walk only format.
