A smoking and vaping ban is in effect on all New Jersey beaches this summer. The law was passed and signed by Governor Phil Murphy last year. It is $250 for a first violation, $500 for a second violation, and $1,000 for each subsequent violation. The law does not specify who would enforce the new law, but left it up to each community to determine whether it’s lifeguards, special police officers, regular police officers, beach badge checkers, or someone else would write citations.... A fire broke out down the Jersey shore, ruining one family's Memorial Day weekend before it started. It happened just before 11 p.m. on the 5600 block of Central Avenue in Sea Isle City. The family had just arrived when their SUV caught fire in the driveway. It then quickly spread to the home. Neighboring houses were evacuated as a precaution. It took firefighters 40 minutes to bring the blaze under control. No one was injured.

Pennsylvania Governor Tom Wolf proclaimed Thursday, May 23, which is the 143rd day of the year, as '1-4-3 Day' in honor of Mister Fred Rogers. Video captured by a motorist in Fox Chase shows a SEPTA bus get caught underneath the arm of the train crossing as it was coming down, and then breaking it off as it drives away. It happened on Saturday afternoon, 5/18, at a Regional Rail crossing on Oxford Ave. The driver of the car that took the video, Feodor Nikonov, says the train came by about 30 seconds after the bus crossed the tracks. An employee of a convenience store was shot and injured during a robbery in Juniata on Wednesday morning, 5/22. It happened around 8:30 a.m. at Brito Minimart on the 1500 block of Lycoming Street. Three masked men entered the store and announced a robbery. Then one of them shot the male cashier in his 30s. Philadelphia Mayor Jim Kenney won the Democratic nomination for mayor in a landslide in Tuesday's primaries. Kenney won roughly 67% of the vote going up against State Sen. A Philadelphia plainclothes officer opened fire on a man with special needs begging for quarters because the officer believed the man was armed. It happened around 9 p.m. on the 3400 block of G Street in Kensington. The family has identified the victim as 28-year-old Joel Johnson.
